Why the categories are different
Board shorts were designed for surfing: long so the board does not rub the thighs, loose so they do not restrict paddling, no liner so they dry on the board. Those are good design decisions for surfers and poor ones for everyone else. For swimming, a loose long short is drag and a wet flag around the knees. For the pool bar, it looks like swimwear. Tucann's cut solves for the second group: a short, tailored trunk with a liner that makes it wearable from the water to dinner.

Great graphics, perfect material and the inside mesh is very useful. In my opinion they could be 1 inch shorter but that's my personal taste.
Where board shorts still win
Surfing. Tucann does not make a surf length and the cut is not intended for a board. Twelve reviews in the archive mention surfing, all positive, but these are customers swimming and body surfing rather than riding waves daily. And if you simply prefer a loose fit, a tailored trunk will feel fitted, because it is.
